Traditionally men wore a 'gansey' ...

What's a 'gansey'  - a seamless pullover or jumper worn by seamen could be one description but it is without doubt much more...

A fisherman's gansey was a working garment, it had to standup to the harsh environment of life at sea, a 5-ply worsted wool was used and together with the 'tight' knit helped make it a 'waterproof' garment often know as 'seaman's iron'.  A gansey is knit using 'knit 1, purl 1' and combinations of these two stitches form the intricate patterns that can be found on fishermen's ganseys.  However, the pattern had a more important role to play than purely decorative. These decorative patterns were unique to each village and it was once possible to identify a fisherman by his gansey.
